Survey: Protein Deficiency Epidemic in Urban India

Qnet Protein

According to a recent report presented by IMRB on “Protein Consumption in the Diet of Adult Indians (PRODIGY)”, more than 70% diets in urban India are protein deficient. What’s even scarier is that more than 90% of the urban population is unaware of the protein requirements and the side effects of protein deficiency. There are only one-third people amongst this urban population who are aware that protein deficiency can cause problems like fatigue and weakness.
The prime reason of this ignorance is the lack of awareness of importance of protein in human body. We work to maintain calcium and iron in our bodies but we ignore proteins, without realizing the importance of it. The less we know is that proteins are one of the primary building blocks of human body. Our muscles, hair, tissues, enzymes and even some of the hormones are made up of proteins; protein helps in creating hemoglobin and antibodies that are good for our immune system.
Proteins play a major role in our everyday routine tasks like controlling the blood sugar levels, fighting bacteria; protein contains the macronutrients that help in coping with wear and tear of body tissues. The deficiency of this important nutrient in our body can lead many health problems like weight gain, lack of concentration, weak immunity, sluggishness and many more.
The prime reason for the protein deficiency in urban Indian population is the higher consumption of fast food that does not contain or have very low nutrition value. According to the experts, the protein consumption in adults should be 1gram per kg of their body weight.  Rich sources of protein include milk, soy, pulses, eggs, fish, chicken, green leafy vegetables etc.

Introduce Protein in your daily diet: It is not just important for body builders or malnourished people to have protein or protein supplements.
